 | Welcome To Sharyn's pages on the internet In this first paragraph, I should introduce myself, my business, my club, or my reason for building a Web site. I can use the subheadings below to give detailed introductions, or I can just summarize the introduction here. I could also give visitors tips for navigating my siteâ€â€what’s located under each button, for example. |

Picture of a conch shell below and write up to the right. [Wikipedia Commons] | What is a Conch! A Conch it the common name for certain marine gastropod mollusks having a heavy, spiral shell, the whorls of which overlap each other. The animal inside the shell is eaten, either raw, as in salads, or cooked, as in fritters, chowders, gumbos, and burgers. In East Asian cuisines, the meat is often cut into thin slices and then steamed or stir-fried. Conch meat is also often confused with Scungilli, which is more accurately whelk meats. A conch (pronounced "konk" (IPA: /k%u0252%u014Bk/) or "konch" (IPA: /k%u0252nt%u0283/)) is a sea-dwelling mollusk, and more specifically, a marine gastropod. Still, it should be noted that many other gastropods have common names using conch, such as the Horse Conch (Pleuroploca gigantea). The genus Strombus is made up of the true conches in the family Strombidae. While most Strombid species are extinct, at least 65 species are extant. Of these, most are in the Indo-Pacific Oceans while six are in the greater Caribbean region. Living true conch species include the Queen Conch, Strombus gigas, and the West Indian Fighting Conch (Strombus pugilis). Many conch, such as the Queen Conch, are found among beds of sea grass in warm tropical waters. Strombus gigas is included in Appendix II of the UNEP's CITES list of endangered species and international trade is heavily restricted. [http://www.bookrags.com/wiki/Conch] |
